Viaje al país de las almas

Pre-Textos, 1999 | Trip to the Country of Souls

(Trip to the Country of Souls) An illustrated journey through Animism as an example of cultural endurance. Indeed, in the last decades, both Islam and Christianity have gained ground and been dramatically promoted in Africa, thus undermining the popularity of indigenous African religions. In spite of this situation, in countries such as Benin, Togo and The Ivory Coast, some communities are doing their best to keep that culture alive. Due at first to colonial prejudice and later to urbanization, Animism has gradually become seen as an old-fashioned belief which may hinder progress in Africa. Nevertheless, Animism has managed to influence Islam and Christianity giving birth to syncretic forms. Being Animist in Africa today is far more than a religious choice – it is a political one.
