El año del desierto
Salto de Página, 2010
(The Year of the Desert) A storm advances unremittingly from the suburbs, surrounding the city of Buenos Aires. It transforms vacant buildings filled with vegetation, asphalt studded with weeds. Maria Valdés Neylán, a secretary working in a steel-and-glass skyscraper, will have to survive in a world that has crumbled: where disorder spreads, epidemics have sprouted, and food rots inexplicably fast. Over the span of one year, she will be a nurse and a colonial pioneer, a hostage to the braucos and a goddess among the natives. From the brothels of the port to the expanses of the La Pampa plains, her steps will lead her to forget from where she comes—and remember her story.
(Spain, Salto de Página); (France, Payot & Rivages); (Greece, Polis)
