Xuan Bello is one of the most significant contemporary Spanish writers. He writes in the Asturian language and translates himself into Spanish, and lives in Asturias although he has spent long periods in Portugal and Italy. In 1982 he published his first collection of poetry, Nel cuartu mariellu [In the yellow room], written when he was just sixteen.  Since then he has produced a body of work that includes poetry, essays, fiction and journalism. He received recognition from the literary world with the publication of his own translation of his novel Historia Universal de Paniceiros (Debate, 2002 / Ámbitu 2004 / Adesiara 2005 / Postivas 2006), which won the Ramón Gómez de la Serna prize for fiction, was shortlisted for the Premi Llibreter, and was one of the books most recommended by Spanish critics in 2003. This title was published together with Los cuarteles de la memoria (Debate, 2003) in a single volume entitled Paniceiros (Mondadori, 2004). His other books, a blend of essay and story, are Pantasmes, mundos, laberintos [Ghosts, worlds, labyrinths] (VTP Editorial, 1996), La memoria del mundu [The memory of the world] (Libros del Pexe, 1998), La nieve y otros complementos circunstanciales [The snow and other incidental accompaniments] (Ámbitu, 2006 / Adesiara 2010), Al Dios del llugar [To the god of the place] (Ámbitu, 2007 / El pasaje de las letras, 2007) and La confesión xeneral [General confession] (Ámbitu, 2009).
