Enrique Vila-Matas is one of the most prestigious and original writers in contemporary Spanish fiction. He is the author of several books which, as a trademark of his genius, mix different genres. Among his works one should not fail to mention: La asesina ilustrada (Tusquets, 1977), Impostura (Anagrama, 1984), Historia abreviada de la literatura portátil (Anagrama, 1985), Una casa para siempre (Anagrama, 1988), Suicidios ejemplares (Anagrama, 1991), El viajero más lento (Anagrama, 1992), Hijos sin hijos (Anagrama, 1993), Recuerdos inventados: primera antología personal (Anagrama, 1994), Lejos de Veracruz (Anagrama, 1995), Extraña forma de vida (Anagrama, 1997), El viaje vertical (Anagrama, 1999. He is the recipient of several awards such as Premio Rómulo Gallegos 2001 for El viaje vertical. Bartleby y compañía, was selected as the best book of the year by French booksellers and was awarded the Ciudad de Barcelona Award and the Fernando Aguirre-Libralire Ward. El Mal de Montano (Premio Herralde, 2002) has been granted the Critics Award both in Spain and Chile, as well as the Prix Médicis in France and the Ennio Flaiano International Award. Doctor Pasavento won the Fundación Lara Award 2006 and the Real Academia Española Award 2006. El viajero más lento won the Elsa Morante Litterary Prize 2007. Exploradores del abismo, published in Italy by Feltrinelli in 2011, won the Sixth Edition of Gregor von Rezzori International Prize for the Best Work of Fiction. Dublinesca has been awarded the Prix Jean Carrière 2010 and the Bottari Lattes Grinzane International Award 2011.
DeBolsillo (Random House Mondadori) has just launched the Vila-Matas Library with four titles – Chet Baker piensa en su arte, an anthology of short stories; En un lugar solitario, containing early works of fiction; Una vida absolutamente maravillosa. Ensayos selectos and the novel Dublinesca . The Vila-Matas Library will make accessible the most celebrated works and some new and previously unpublished texts by this author.
His works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
